Summertime Fun

This post doesn’t have any pictures, but when you don’t write for a long time you just have to force yourself to do it and break the silence.

I just returned from a month long summer vacation with my family on the East Coast. I went with all of my brothers and sisters to Lake George for a week and we had a fantastic time swimming, reading, playing games, boating, jumping off waterfalls (some of us!), eating, playing music, ice-cream desserts, digging in the sand, fishing, etc. It was awesome.

In NJ I spent some wonderful time with my parents as well. My Dad took me kayaking and it was absolutely fabulous.

I have 2 weeks left of summer vacation and our pool has officially been filled after our extensive work pre-NJ vacation time. It was fun to come home and be able to finally swim in it.

This coming year I have a lot of ideas and fun things that I would like to do. The first thing on my list, however, is that I am making a wedding dress for my “babysitter” although she is all grown up now. After my last wedding dress, I swore I would never make another, but after all, it is Rachel and I would do anything for her. So, I will try to post some pictures and show the process of the dress.

I will be offering 2 kids sewing classes this year, but I’m going to wait a month to get school going (and the wedding dress sewn!) before I start them.

It’s an exciting year and I am just excited. Thanks to Joshua Stamper too who is going to be orchestrating some of my songs and he is just so very brilliant. The famous Andrew Smith is also going to be drumming.

That’s all and hopefully now that the silence has been broken, more will flow forth.

Mollie and Me – Making Some Tea

Oh, I can be so silly sometimes! I hope you have been following Wild Olive and the virtual tea party going on over there. What fantastic posts and giveaways!

I am really excited to share this post with you. A little while ago, Mollie contacted me and asked if I might be interested in collaborating with her in making some tea party dresses! Really, how could I possibly say no? So, this post is to share with you a little of the process of our Tea Party Dress designs. Oh, did I say designs? Well, after some back and forth, we decided to do a little “mini-line” of dresses. These are all in Mamma Made’s typical “Sewing Kit” fashion. For those of you who are not familiar with Mamma Made sewing kits, let me tell you about them! (Here’s my shameless plug!)

Our Mamma Made Sewing Kits take the difficulty out of sewing! The kit includes fabric (100% Organic Cotton Sateen) with the pattern and design printed right on it. No marking, no tracing! All you have to do is cut and sew! You can read in-depth directions on our website or print out the .pdf file for your convenience. What could be easier? A designer dress in just hours!
RachelSig

Well, I did say it was shameless. I don’t have any PR personnel over here. Please enjoy this inside look to our design process!

Design Process for Tea Party Dress!

We started with a color palette to keep us grounded to a scheme. I really like knowing what my base colors are and then it’s easy to branch out from that if needed.  I really wanted to offer something a little different for our tea party designs and stay away from your typical candy pinks and so forth. I’m sure when I said, “candy pink” you had a visual exactly what I’m talking about. Here is our starting color palette:

ColorPalette

I love all of these bold colors. There are a couple design challenges presented here. Although we are designing for children and they can pull off bright colors like this, there is a line that is easily crossed into “circus” territory. We want to try and avoid that and still embrace the fun of a tea party and the joy of these happy colors.

Here are the first “tea party” images that Mollie sent me. We have 4 tea cups and a tea pot.

TeaCups

They are such happy little tea cups! I was instantly in love when I saw this.

Our sample size of this dress is being made into a size 8 for Mollie’s sister which limits our design a bit. When you start working in the bigger sizes, obviously the pattern pieces get larger and that yard of fabric gets sucked up pretty quickly. So, right away we knew that the dress would be sleeveless. Sleeves take up so much room! When we offer the smaller sizes, I’m sure we can throw a sleeve option in the yard, but for this sample, no sleeves.

I was really inspired by the lid of the tea pot and the lines on it. Because of the lid, I decided I wanted to create an A-line skirt so that I could mimic the lines on the lid and they wouldn’t get lost in gathers or pleats. I like how the yellow lines look on the orange cup so I decided to start with those colors for the skirt.

SkirtA

Now for the bodice. I don’t want the dress to be too dark so I’m going to choose a slightly lighter shade of orange for the top. And we already know that the dress is sleeveless.

BasicDress

Now I want to pick a color that is going to “pop” out of the orange to give us a little contrasting interest. I love the blue on the teapot and I want to see how that would work on the bodice in the exact colors that Mollie gave me.

DressTeapot

I like it. I angled the pot so it looks like it’s pouring. Kind of appropriate for a tea party, don’t ya think? Now I want to incorporate our tea cups into the design and I think they will look quite nice on the extra-wide sash area.

BodiceCups

I added a little drip of tea.  Each of the cups I sized differently for visual interest. They look like such a happy little tea family, don’t they?

I want to add a small touch more to the bodice but it’s already so close to being overwhelmed by the color and design. This little guy caught my eye.

CupWFlower

What a sweet little flower. I’m going to play around with it a tiny bit.

DressFront

I added a small sprinkling of flowers to the upper right shoulder and repeated the flowers in the sash. I always like to include a sash option because it really makes the fit more personalized for the child. In the older garments, the sash is shorter so it’s a small tie verses a huge bow. The sash will only give a hint of the flower design because it will be tied in the back, so not too overwhelming. Now on to the back of the dress.

DressBack

I wanted to bring in the floral motif in the back with the delicate spattering of flowers. It’s fun to have something to look at in the back as well and again, the tie will just hint at the flowers.

Now for the inside lining of the bodice. I like to make a necklace with my tag on it; the kids think it’s fun and so do I. This is our “Wild Olive/Mamma Made” tag. I made a joke one and sent it to Mollie. Maybe I’ll show it to you later. It’s pretty funny.

WildOliveMammaMadeTag

And here are the washing directions also printed on the front bodice.

Tag

The organic cotton is so great to work with. I really love it. You can wash and dry it of course, but I found that the best results (and especially if you hate to iron like me!) are to wash it, take it out and shake it, hang it on a hanger, and let it air dry. Then the dress is ready to go!

Here is our final design of Tea Party front and back:

The yard of fabric looks like this:

My First Sewing Class

I wanted to share some photos of some very proud girls who have hand-sewn their first doll. My first sewing class has been an amazing success and I am so very proud of each of my students. They range from 2nd graders to 4th graders and this is what they accomplished all on their own.

In six weeks they have sketched out their doll idea, picked out textiles, cut out patterns, pinned, cut out fabric, hand embroidered, hand stitched pieces together, stuffed, and sewed yarn on their doll’s head. I am so very impressed. They finished their dolls this past week and had a little “doll fashion show” for their parents.

Getting Back Into The Groove

Well, I’m back from tour and it was a fantastic time. Once I get my breath and a little distance from it all, I’ll post some pictures and highlights of my cross-country experience. There are A LOT of pictures I need to sort through. It was great talking to and meeting face to face some people I’ve only had “online” experiences with. That’s always cool to put a smiley face with an email personality.

Summer is just around the corner and our avocado trees are making us smile!

My husband Jon makes the most amazing guacamole. Yummy!

Easter vacation is over and it’s time to get back on the school schedule and finish things up for the year. Oh, by the way, if you would like to see the Easter video of me leading the kids at my church (Harbor Chula Vista) in an Easter song, you can see it below.

I’m trying to think about what is “next” for me and I have to say that I’m pretty excited about the rest of this year and next year. My first sewing class with kids (ranging from 2nd grade through 4th grade) has been a huge success. It is so fun for me to teach these kids how to sew and create something that belongs to them. The next two weeks they will learn beginning machine skills and make a bag. I’ll show you pictures in a following post as I took lots of them of these girls with their dolls. They are sooooooo proud. Next year I am opening up my schedule so that I can have a couple classes offered simultaneously.

I’m still working on music and I can see a couple of opportunities opening up for me this year. Jon and I are slowly working on recording my album which I’m super excited about. Some other projects with friends are in the midst as well….

Well, just wanted to let you know I’m still alive.

Danielson Tour–Getting Ready

I have been in a whirlwind trying to get ready for my part of the Danielson tour. The rest of the band has been on the road for about 2 weeks now and I am going to meet up with them tomorrow in Los Angeles. It’s been fun looking at all the pictures they are posting on Facebook and I know they are having a fantastic time. Tonight is Elin’s last show (for now) and she flies back East tomorrow morning. We will meet up with her and Megan in Washington D. C. and that will be an amazing show. I can’t remember the last time Megan, Elin and I all sang together in the same show. I’m really looking forward to it.

Although it won’t be the same, Elin’s Norweigan sister, “Elin” will be singing her song, “Lil Norge” for her onstage.

D_D

You know that it will be her, well because…it’s just OBVIOUS, isn’t it?

D_E

I have been getting myself and my costume ready for this “Best of Gloucester County” tour. This includes sewing some “eyes” on my costume.

I think I am ready!!!! Check out the rest of the tour schedule as we will be coming back East ending in Philadelphia.

Caterpillars and Snow Flakes

Sometimes it seems as though all of my sewing projects are for my children. (I wonder why?) Once and awhile I get a crazy urge just to make something for me that is super quick and instant gratification. I just love instant gratification, don’t you?

I was in my garage and noticed 2 pillow forms I had bought a long time ago and decided I was finally going to make some new pillows for my living room. I found the fabric I wanted, cut out all the pieces for both pillows, and started to create a pieced flower pillow with all of my little circles.

My daughter Eleanor, who is three years old, saw me working with all of my cut out fabric circles and asked if she could help. Because this was a project for ME, I let her play with a bunch of circles on the fabric cut for my second pillow while I worked away on my real one. I left her working away in the living room to sew up my flower pillow and I’m very happy with how it turned out.

RachelGalloway_Pillow

I picked out a loose-weave upholstery fabric that is nice and soft but still has some body to it. Because it is a loose-weave the edges will fray (you can see them starting to already) to give it a nice organic feel. My pillow form is a feather pillow so it’s great to grab and snuggle with on the couch.

Satisfied with my first pillow, I was about to go to the living room to start on my second when Eleanor came in with her “pillow.” She had painstakingly purposefully pinned the circles on the front of the pillow in a very specific formation and proudly explained her creation to me. She called it, “Caterpillar and Snow Flakes.”

Well, since her creation turned out even more impressive than mine, I had to sew it up exactly as it was presented and explained to me.

I present to you, “Caterpillar and Snow Flakes!”

Eleanor_Pillow

Just in case a little explanation will help you…

Now tell me, what can be better than that? I just don’t know.

Sew Mama Sew is having a Pillow Month and contest.  I am going to submit our pillows in the contest. I don’t know, but I think “Caterpillars and Snow Flakes” is going to give me a run for my money!
